The Trevor Project is the world’s largest suicide prevention and crisis intervention organization for LGBTQ young people. We are a non-profit that provides 24/7 life-saving support via phone, text and chat. We also operate the world’s largest safe space social networking site for LGBTQ youth and run innovative research, education and advocacy programs. We’ve been saving lives every day for 20 years.

    Overview of the role

The General Counsel will oversee all legal matters related to The Trevor Project, both by reviewing and solving issues independently as well as working with Trevor’s best-in-class pro bono law firm partners. Highest pr iority areas include business-related topics, including contract review and negotiation, data privacy compliance, and non-profit tax rules. A portion of their time will support our advocacy work, including amicus briefs, FOIA requests and potentially impact litigation. The General Counsel will also work closely with department heads on processes and risks impacting their functions.

    Who you are

Experienced.  You are a barred attorney with experience across several of Trevor’s most common areas, including partnership and service contracts, risk management, HIPAA compliance, advocacy, and the tax, corporate, and compliance issues that affect 501(c)(3) organizations

Fast and analytical. You quickly understand a situation and identify the key pieces necessary to move forward

Resourceful. Even when you don’t have the answer to a particular question, you can find the right experts and sources to get it done

Goal-oriented. You approach problems to be solved from a “what would it take to get this done” mentality, while identifying obstacles and risk

Collaborative.  You can communicate clearly with non-lawyers on legal topics. You also understand the varying needs of staff, the board, and the organization as a whole, and are keenly aware of potential conflicts of interest

Flexible. You are comfortable navigating ambiguity and working through competing priorities

Passionate. You care about LGBTQ youth. You care about saving lives. You want to come to work and feel inspired every day. You want to change the world

Fun. The work we do is very serious, but that doesn’t mean we don’t have fun. We know how to have a good time and you should too

    What you’ll do

Pro-actively work with all parts of the organization on legal topics (e.g., data security, employment law, licensing/intell ectual property), including running any necessary trainings

Conduct due diligence on potential partnerships and clearly articulate risks and mitigations to leadership

Take the lead in addressing situations as they arise

Establish and run a clear system of contract review and negotiation, ensuring that organizational priorities and risk mitigation are both considered

Alongside the Advocacy team, advance Trevor’s work in areas impacting LGBTQ youth (e.g., via amicus briefs, FOIA requests, potential impact litigation)

Build and maintain relationships with Trevor’s pro bono law firms, including partners and associates

Oversee ongoing compliance with IRS rules, state and federal filing requirements, and governance best practices

Keep up to date on legal changes that are relevant to Trevor, and lead the implementation of changes when necessary
