    The Cleveland-Marshall College of Law, Cleveland State University, is seeking to hire a Legal Writing Professor of Law.  The position begins with annual appointments and, upon successful completion of five annual appointments, is followed by a presumptively renewable five-year contract.  Legal Writing professors at Cleveland-Marshall may also apply for promotion to Senior Legal Writing Professor three or more years after attaining the first five-year appointment.  The contract length is for a 10 month period beginning on August 1st and ending on May 30th.  Legal Writing professors have the opportunity to teach during the summer by way of an overload contract should there be curricular need.     

    Duties: The successful candidate will regularly teach two sections of the required first-year Legal Writing and Research course.  Cleveland-Marshall has both a day and an evening program, and the successful candidate will periodically be required to teach in the evening division.

    The first year Legal Writing course is six credits, with three credits each semester.  Course load has been approximately 33-37 students (for the two sections combined) and is expected to remain the same for the 2021-22 academic year. The candidate may occasionally teach a third-semester legal writing course in an area of specialization such as transactional drafting, litigation drafting, or scholarly writing.  This depends on first year enrollment.   Legal Writing professors also routinely supervise upper level writing projects that fulfill the school’s upper level writing requirement.

    Legal Writing professors also participate in academic service and faculty governance, including service on College of Law and University committees. Legal Writing professors may advise student organizations and may have other administrative and advising duties within the College of Law. They may choose to participate in the broader legal writing community through publications, presentations, and service, and are eligible to apply for summer research and/or teaching grants.  Legal Writing professors are entitled to vote on most matters related to faculty governance, but not matters related to conferring of tenure or promotions of tenured professors.

    Minimum Qualifications: Candidates must have a J.D. or equivalent degree from an ABA accredited law school, and at least two years of practical experience.  The practical experience may include work in a law office, courthouse, or other experience of comparable nature demonstrating acumen regarding the law and effective legal communication.

    Preferred Qualifications:  Preferred qualifications include practice experience demonstrating legal writing and research expertise; a strong academic record; teaching experience; potential for excellence in teaching legal writing; strong interpersonal skills; and a long-term commitment to teaching legal writing.  Preferred candidates should demonstrate the ability to contribute through teaching and service to diversity, cultural sensitivity, and the overall law school mission of promoting tolerance, inclusion, and social justice.
