Supreme Court of Ohio Justice-Elect Jennifer Brunner is accepting applications for the position of Judicial Attorney in her chambers, beginning January 2, 2021. It is a full-time position with no predetermined duration of appointment, and thus, a commitment to long-term service is valued.  Any successful candidate should be prepared to telework from home until the Court determines that it is appropriate for all employees to resume working onsite at 65 S. Front Street, Columbus, OH 43215.

The nature of the work to be performed includes but is not limited to reviewing and analyzing a variety of motions and memoranda in support of discretionary jurisdiction of the Court.  This work involves analyzing the claims and legal issues presented in those filings made before the Court.  The work also involves thorough review and synthesis of the salient portions of sometimes voluminous records developed in appellate and trial court litigation. Additionally, the work involves researching and drafting merit opinions at the direction of the Justice.

Applicants must be law school graduates, licensed to practice and in good standing in the State of Ohio or with application for Ohio licensure pending.  Applicants must demonstrate strong analytical, research, writing and oral communication skills. Applicants must demonstrate discretion and sound judgment in support of the collective work of the court.  Strong technology skills are necessary, such as adeptness with Microsoft Word, Excel, PDF conversion and editing, and Internet legal research and multi-system interoperability skills needed for teleworking.  Any successful candidate must be able to work independently, collaboratively, and with self-discipline to meet necessary completion goals to successfully contribute to the overall work of the court.

Prior appellate clerkship experience is valued, along with private practice experience in either criminal or civil litigation or both and/or practice in government-related litigation.  Prior experience demonstrating personal traits of cooperativeness, willingness to collaborate, accountability, humility and respect for all persons is highly valued.

The Court seeks to recruit and retain talented individuals with a commitment to public service.

This is a State of Ohio, exempt, unclassified position. The starting salary is commensurate with experience and ranges from $68,000 to over $100,000.  A successful candidate also is eligible to receive benefits associated with State of Ohio employment.

Interested applicants should submit a cover letter, résumé, law school transcript (copy or unofficial transcript is acceptable at time of application), and three letters of recommendation to BrunnerResume@sc.ohio.gov no later than December 7, 2020. Letters of recommendation may be submitted separately by the recommending individuals by the deadline.

The State of Ohio is an Equal Employment Opportunity Employer and does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, religion, gender, gender identity or expression, national origin (ancestry), military status, disability, age (40 years or older), genetic information, sexual orientation, or caregiver status, in making employment-related decisions about an individual.

    Background Check Information

The final candidate selected for the position will be required to undergo a criminal background check and a pre-employment drug test.  Criminal convictions do not necessarily preclude an applicant from consideration for a position.  An individual assessment of an applicant’s prior criminal convictions will be made before excluding an applicant from consideration.
